The below biography was extracted from Lest We Forget, a family history written in 1983 and 1984 by Lucille “Tippy” Rebecca Kyle Harr, and updated in 2010 by Debra Harr.

Seymour Harr was born on March 9, 1839, in Harrison County and was the son of Merrick Harr, Sr. He came to Canaan Valley around 1889. Prior to this he lived in Lumberport, West Virginia.

Seymour is said to have had a large farm in Canaan and raised his family there.

He married Lucetta Roby Harr and they were the parents of:

  • Jacob Homer

  • John Rufus

  • Richard James Merrick

  • Mollie and Mamie—who were twins. Mollie, or Mary as it is written in “Roots” by Ruth Cooper Allman, married Reece Mayle, and Mamie married G. Frank Cooper

  • Charlotte Isabelle—who was a nurse and never married

Seymour Harr and wife Lucetta Roby Harr were pioneers of Canaan Valley.

Seymour is buried in the Cortland Cemetery in Canaan Valley. He died March 1, 1917, at the age of 78, supposedly at Weston State Hospital.

The pictures of Seymour and Lucetta are the centerfold of the book “Roots” by Ruth Cooper Allman.
