Dorothy and Winton Hyre’s home was located in Petersburg, West Virginia, located beside Marvin Chapel Church near the Fish Hatchery.
During the flood of 1985, due to remnants of Hurricane Juan, the South Branch of the Potomac River reached 25.4 feet at the U.S. Geological Survey gaging station near Petersburg. Thousands of homes and businesses were destroyed. Dorothy and Winton’s former home was damaged, and the extent of the flooding can be seen in the picture below.
In 1986, the home was moved 1/2 mile from its original location. The news article below shows a picture of the home on a moving truck.
